The Abandoned Beetle
As a kid, my favorite movie was Herbie the Love Bug and although I did not speak English, I knew every word, and was able to recite the whole movie. A friend of my parents had a Beetle that I named “Herbie”, and on a trip to Margarita Island Herbie lost his eyes… at the age of 4, I noticed that someone had stolen the head lights. It is one of my most vivid anecdotes and candid memory of my childhood in Venezuela.
My fascination with this vehicle goes beyond the machine, it is an emotional connection. I have never owned a Beetle, but there is always tomorrow.
Great shots! They led me to remember the red VW Beetle that my best friend Alice had when we were in college. It was the loudest car in town – you could always tell when Alice was approaching! And the heater was so HOT that it seemed like our shoes would melt. I am sure the car’s long gone, and I lost track of Alice, too…
Hahaha… I too remember the most how loud it was and the smell of the vinyl seats.
I learned to drive on a black VW in 1969. You might enjoy my VW family shot
